Designing and Specifying your playground

When designing and planning your playground area it is useful to know some of the following details in advance to help us quote your design more accurately which will ensure a safe and stimulating play area for children of all ages.

Playground plan self assessment

Lets consider the main factors in designing your new playground

  • What is the name of the playground and site location?
  • Would you like Russell Leisure to carry out a free site survey?
  • Approximately how many children will the playground have to cater for?
  • How many age groups should you allow for, toddlers, juniors or teenagers?
  • Are there any special needs to be considered?
  • Are there any existing playground units or structures needing to be retained?
  • Are there any existing playground units or structures needing to be removed?
  • What is the shape and what are the dimentions of the new playground area?
  • Will you choose the standard colour combinations or provide your own RAL number?
  • Are there any local guidelines or restrictions the playground must conform to for example:
  • Is there a maximum height for play structures?
  • Do you need to adhere to playground and equipment colours?
  • Is there Specific Playground accessibility required?
  • Are there sufficient plants and trees or should you think about introducing natural elements?
  • Do you need to Maintain local characteristics or introduce new themes?
  • Are there any underground pipes, cables or drainage you are aware of?

Your budget and making the most of it

Your playground may require additional elements which need to be considered

  • Will the playground equipment be supply only or supply and installation?
  • Will the playground site require pre-installation preparation?
  • Does the playground area require fencing or lighting?
  • What types of playground and area surfacing are required?
  • Do you require a specific budget assigned to surface graphics?
  • Do you require playground signage?

How to specify your playground equipment

It is important to mention the accdreditation and certification of play units

  • All Metro metalwork is hot dip galvanized to BS EN ISO 1461 and 2178 and powder coated as a
    continuous process.
  • Metro units conform to EN 1176 and TüV has independently certified all products to these standards.
